Everything you need to know about the UK's most widely used food safety management system.
The Basics
What is Safer Food Better Business?
Safer Food Better Business (SFBB) is a food safety management system created by the UK Food Standards Agency (FSA). It gives food businesses a practical, documented way to identify food safety risks, control hazards, and demonstrate good food safety practices — particularly during Environmental Health Officer (EHO) inspections.
Unlike more complex frameworks, SFBB is designed to be straightforward and accessible, making it the go-to system for small and medium food businesses across the UK.
Who needs Safer Food Better Business?
SFBB applies to most food businesses in the UK. If you prepare, cook, store, handle, or serve food to the public, you are expected to have an effective food safety management system in place. This includes restaurants, takeaways, cafés, bakeries, street food traders, catering businesses, sandwich shops, mobile food units, and hotel or school kitchens.
For small and medium businesses, SFBB is the most widely accepted way to meet this requirement.
Is SFBB a legal requirement?
Food businesses in the UK are legally required to have an effective food safety management system under Regulation (EC) No 852/2004. SFBB is not the only system you can use, but it is the most widely recognised and accepted approach for small and medium businesses, and it is what most EHOs will expect to see.
Failing to have any system in place (or having one that staff do not understand) can result in a lower Food Hygiene Rating and potential enforcement action.
Is SFBB the same as HACCP?
SFBB is based on HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) principles, but simplifies them into a more practical format for small food businesses. A completed SFBB pack is generally accepted as meeting the HACCP-based food safety management requirement under UK food hygiene law.
Using SFBB
What is included in an SFBB pack?
A full SFBB pack covers every key area of food safety management:
- Food safety management guidance ("the 4 Cs": cross-contamination, cleaning, chilling, cooking)
- Hazard control procedures
- Cleaning schedules
- Opening and closing checks
- Diary and record-keeping sections
- Space to document monitoring and corrective actions
How often should I update my SFBB records?
Many sections — such as opening checks, temperature logs, and cleaning records — should be completed daily. The pack itself should be reviewed whenever your menu, processes, or staff change significantly.
Regular, consistent records are far more valuable to EHOs than a pack filled in all at once before an inspection.
Can I use a digital version of SFBB?
Yes, the FSA offers digital SFBB tools. However, many businesses prefer a printed pack as it is easier for staff to use on the floor, sign off daily, and present directly to inspectors. Our printed packs are professionally produced and available in multiple languages.
Inspections & Ratings
Why does SFBB matter for food hygiene inspections?
Environmental Health Officers use SFBB as a reference point during inspections. A completed, up-to-date pack is one of the clearest signals that your business manages food safety every day — not just when an inspector arrives.
It demonstrates that your business understands the risks, has procedures to control hazards, trains staff appropriately, and keeps consistent records of daily monitoring.
What happens if I don't have an SFBB pack during an EHO inspection?
An EHO will assess whether your business has a suitable food safety management system in place. Without one — or with one that is incomplete or not understood by staff — you are likely to receive a lower Food Hygiene Rating. In serious cases, enforcement action can follow.
Translated Packs
Why are translated SFBB packs important?
SFBB guidance is officially published in English. But many UK food businesses rely on multilingual teams where English is not the first language for everyone handling food. When guidance is misunderstood, critical safety steps can be missed — increasing the risk of failed inspections, lower hygiene ratings, and harm to customers.
Professionally translated packs remove this barrier. When every team member genuinely understands the system, food safety becomes part of daily operations rather than a document sitting on a shelf.
Which languages are available?
We currently provide professionally translated SFBB packs in Polish, Romanian, Bengali, Punjabi, Urdu, Greek, Portuguese, Italian, Polish, Turkish, Mandarin, Spanish and many more. If you need a language not listed, please get in touch.
My staff speak different languages, how can they all use the same system?
Each translated pack mirrors the full English SFBB system, so the procedures, record-keeping, and daily checks are all consistent across your team — just in the language each person understands best. This leads to more consistent food safety practices and more accurate records during inspections.
Real inspection report findings
Missing or inadequate food safety management systems have been direct contributors to low ratings and poor inspection outcomes.
